汕头地处北回归线，有着丰富的紫菜资源，“莱芜紫菜”、“南澳紫菜”、“东湖紫菜”等“汕头品牌”紫菜闻名遐迩，在国内外市场均受消费者喜爱。据汕头日报2017年报道，汕头市在2017年的紫菜养殖面积已经达到8000亩，年产紫菜干品约1400吨，产值约两亿元，形成了包括育苗、养殖、加工、销售等较完整的紫菜产业链。近年来，为推进紫菜良种化养殖，建成广东省首个省级紫菜良种场，开展了新品种引进和本地品种的改良工作。推广深水浮筏式养殖技术，使紫菜养殖由潮间带向浅海发展，拓展了紫菜养殖海域。在开拓加工销售市场方面，引进和研发坛紫菜专用加工设备，提升加工效率和产品质量，开发生产多品类的紫菜产品，实现紫菜加工机械化和产品多样化。
