On the sixth day of the first lunar month, in theChaoyang of Shantou, a team of Yingge dance is dancing and marching.
In the Chaoshan area,a folk event is held every year in the first month of the lunar calendar--Ying Laoye. This“ying”is a literal translation of Chaoshan dialect. It means inviting local masters to come out of the temple and tour the whole village. If it spreads to the whole country and even overseas, then The term“welcome to the master”is suitable because this kind of activity is carried out on foot, and“ying”means walking beside, which is suitable for this expression.
“Ying Laoye”is composed of several teams of different forms. The most famous among them, and the core component of“Ying Laoye”, is undoubtedly the Chaoshan“Dance of the Heroes”, which was named“Chinese War Dance”by CCTV. (Chaoyang Yingge, Puning Yingge, Jiazi Yingge, etc. was also named“Dance of the Heroes”, but in this article it refers to Chaoyang Yingge). In Chaoyang, Shantou, in addition to Houxi Yingge and Taguan Yingge, there is also a team named Fenggang Yingge, which is well-known to outsiders. This is also one of the main subjects I chose to draw materials this time.
Dance of the Heroes can be divided into fast Yingge and slow Yingge, and Fenggang Yingge belongs to the latter. This dance is based on the plot of Liangshan heroes celebrating the Lantern Festival and attacking Damingfu to rescue Lu Junyi. During the performance, the Yingge team members held a Yingge mallet in each hand, fought each other up, down, left, and right, and marched slowly to the sound of whistles. One of them shouted loudly Shouting“houvei!”, everyone stepped forward and leaped into the air. This dance step integrates drama, dance and martial arts. The dance is vigorous, rough and unrestrained. It is majestic, mighty, strong and heroic, giving people a shock of strength and beauty. Therefore, some people call it the“Flying Dance of the Heroes”.
I hope to present to the audience the grand occasion of“Ying Laoye”in Chaoshan area and tell a different Chinese story from the perspective of a native Chaoshan person and as a person who has experienced it. If“Ying Laoye”did not have“Dance of the Heroes”, it would be a little less lively and pyrotechnic. Therefore, I took Fenggang Yingge as the main component of this collection. They show different expressions of Dance of the Heroes from different perspectives, such as the visual impact brought by its unrestrained and heroic dance, the bond between Dance of the Heroes and the local village from the perspective of God, the spark of collision between Dance of the Heroes and the future flowers of the motherland, and its tolerance and openness to women, etc., and the audience divided The scene of standing on both sides of the road and looking into the distance proves from the side the importance of Dance of the Heroes in the hearts of local people.
However,“Ying Laoye”is not the same as Dance of the Heroes. As mentioned above, it consists of several different teams: Dance of the Heroes Team, Standard Chess Team, Junior Gong and Drum Team, Colorful Flag Team, Martial Arts Team, and Chaozhou Band. The number of photo albums is limited, so I can only select the most exciting ones to display. Among them, the parade will march to some designated ancestral halls or other places to stop for performances. About ten men and women will stand on both sides and sing thefragment of“The Fairy Sends Off Her Son”from“Ten Immortals Celebrating Birthday”under the drum and suona sounds of the leader.
“Ying Laoye”is the spiritual and cultural complex of every native Chaoshan person. It is the cultural epitome of Chaoshan people's pursuit of happiness and prayer for the well-being of their family and country. As a saying goes: If you ask a Chaoshan person to get up at seven o'clock to work, he will definitely scold you for being sick; but if you ask him to get up at five o'clock to watch British songs, he will definitely get up early at three o'clock to join in the fun. This belief has long been deeply imprinted in the cultural memory of every Chaoshan person and will provide them with unlimited support on their way forward in the future.
